Why Give?
Leveling the Playing Field
“Due to the generosity of so many Learning Community investors like you, I now have three things; hope, excitement, and self-confidence. I believe that I am able to smooth out any bumps that high school may bring, I believe that I will gain any and everything that I put my mind to, and I believe that my name will be added to the list of leaders that children look up to.” That’s what Princess, one of our 8th grade students, had to say in front of more than 200 members of our learning community during this year’s Get Smart! Event festivities.
One key strategy behind the success of kids like Princess is our innovative Summer Reading Program that, since its inception in 2016, year-over-year has all but ended the “summer slide” at The Learning Community. (Unfortunately, the Summer Slide remains a phenomenon impacting urban schools across the country, as students experience learning loss each summer without an effective plan to stop it.)
As you know, our democracy depends on future leaders who can discern fact from fiction, grow understanding of complex issues and have the drive to do something about it. Our proven Summer Reading Program (based on R. Allington’s ingenious research summary) is a key building block for making this happen. Will you be one of those who make this happen for our LC kids? Thank you for being a leading member of our learning community.
Planned Gifts
A planned gift is an opportunity to make arrangements now that will support The Learning Community and our students at a later date. Saving on income taxes, avoiding capital gains tax, enjoying higher rates of return than currently provided by an asset, reducing estate costs – are all benefits of making a planned gift. To learn more about whether a planned gift is for you, please contact Derek Collamati at derek@thelearningcommunity.com.
