Broad Impact

The Learning Community is achieving remarkable success. We are also leveraging that success to serve an engine for broader change by sharing what works with other public schools.

teaching_logo_highresVisit the web site for The Teaching Studio, our professional development consulting group, and learn about our exciting 5-year initiative to provide support in reading to five Rhode Island elementary schools.  In 2014-15 we are working with hundreds of public school educators who reach more than 3,800 students.

District public schools educate more than 96% of public school students nationwide, so we partner directly with those schools to offer targeted professional development, delivered by our classroom teachers, to transform teachers’ practice and drives student achievement gains.  We offer teacher-to-teacher professional development based on tools proven in a vibrant school with a 90% poverty rate.

Many professional development practices are developed outside schools and away from the realities of urban districts  — and fail to make an impact in the life of the classroom. The Learning Community provides practical tools and strategies forged from our own daily practice, and our teacher clients find that they can quickly implement lessons learned and see immediate results with their students.

With the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Rhode Island Foundation we are working with Woonsocket and Smithfield classroom teachers, administrators and specialists to improve reading achievement.  This exciting 3-year initiative will reach thousands of students.  >> learn more

The Growing Readers Initiative in Central Falls is redesigning instruction in every elementary school.  Working teacher-to-teacher in every school, coaching, facilitated planning sessions and safety net service design is reaching every student K-2 is the district. And we are showing strong results: In the pilot year 86% of participating students were reading at or above the national benchmark in reading after six months.  >> learn more

The Learning Community has worked with a number of schools and districts on a client basis including East Providence Public Schools,  Sophia Academy, Hull Public Schools and Leominster Public Schools. We actively seek new partners interested in tailored professional development, data-driven instruction, and sharing what is working to close the achievement gap.

“From the moment students enter a school, the most important factor in their success is not the color of their skin or the income of their parents, it’s the person standing at the front of the classroom.” – President Obama

There is growing evidence that the single most important factor in improving student achievement is effective teaching.  While hundreds of places across the nation offer training and professional development for educators, only a few are based in practicing, successful, urban schools.  Examples:

We are grateful to The Rhode Island Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the RI Department of Education for their support for our systemic approach. The Central Falls Public Schools, their teachers, students and administrators are an early and significant partner in this work. To support the growth of our impact we are pursuing available federal stimulus funds, seeking private philanthropic investors and inviting teachers and schools to partner with us.
