  • Kelsey Shayer

    2ND GRADE (2A)

    Kelsey grew up on a dirt road on a farm in Connecticut where her passion for exploring nature was born. Kelsey remains an avid hiker, forager and gardener! Kelsey spent middle and high school switching between several schools in Connecticut, Florida and Rhode Island. Kelsey attended Rhode Island College where she studied Elementary Education and concentrated her studies in science. Kelsey has worked at Achievement First Iluminar Academy for the last seven years as a second and third grade teacher. Kelsey is excited to join The Learning Community to spread her love puns, jokes, and pictures of her pets!

  • Rowan Avila

    2ND GRADE (2B)

    Rowan graduated from the University of New Hampshire with her B.S in Family Studies: Young Child with a focus on Early Childhood Development. She is a Teach for America alumni and taught in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After that, she moved to Rhode Island in 2016 and taught at Achievement First Providence. In Providence, she wrote the 2nd grade ELA curriculum for the network. She has been at The Learning Community for two years now after 9 years of teaching. Rowan grew up in a small town in New Hampshire where she continues to go and visit family. Rowan currently lives in Pawtucket with her two cats, a dog, and husband!

  • Kirsten Shrout Fernandes

    2ND GRADE (2C)

    Kirsten spent seven years at the Learning Community as a 4th grade teacher and Instructional Coach before stepping away to spend more time with her family. In her over 20 years as an educator, Kirsten has been a classroom teacher, an instructional coach and content specialist, and as a school leader focused on anti-bias anti-racist work. She is so happy to be back in the classroom because she loves the sense of community and partnership she gets to build with her students and their families. Kirsten is passionate about empowering her students and helping them become advocates for themselves and the issues that are important to them. When Kirsten isn't in the classroom, she is busy cheering on her three children in their favorite activities, snuggling with her dog, and visiting her husband at their family's restaurant in Woonsocket.
